International Left Handers Day: Why Do We Celebrate it?

Writing with Left Hand

Although I am Right-Handed, I come from a family with Left-Handers. To me seeing someone writing or doing anything with their left hand was a normal thing. I didn’t know that it was different and how many challenges left-handers faced until I was much older.

International Left Handers Day is celebrated annually on August 13th. The day was established to raise awareness of the challenges faced by left-handed individuals and to promote the understanding and acceptance of left-handedness.

Challenges Faced by Left-Handed People

  1. Tool and Product Design: Many everyday items are designed with right-handed users in mind, such as scissors, can openers, and computer mice. This can make tasks more difficult for left-handed individuals.

  2. Education: Historically, left-handed children were often discouraged from using their dominant hand, which could lead to discomfort and reduced fine motor skills.

  3. Social Biases: Left-handed people sometimes face social biases or misconceptions. In some cultures, left-handedness was historically viewed with suspicion or negativity.

Celebrating International Left Handers Day

1. Awareness Campaigns: Engage in or support campaigns that raise awareness about the challenges and achievements of left-handed individuals. This can include social media posts, community events, or educational programs.

2. Celebrate Left-Handed Achievements: Highlight the contributions of famous left-handed people, such as Leonardo da Vinci, Albert Einstein, or Barack Obama, and celebrate their achievements.

3. Advocate for Inclusivity: Use the day to advocate for more inclusive design in products and tools to accommodate left-handed users, making everyday tasks easier and more accessible.

4. Educational Activities: Schools and organizations can use the day to educate people about left-handedness, its history, and how to support left-handed individuals.

5. Personal Celebration: Left-handed individuals can celebrate by embracing their uniqueness, sharing their experiences, and connecting with others who share their left-handedness.

International Left Handers Day is an opportunity to recognize and appreciate the diversity of human experience, celebrate the contributions of left-handed individuals, and work towards a more inclusive world. By raising awareness and promoting understanding, we can help ensure that everyone, regardless of their handedness, has the tools and support they need to thrive.

Cheers to Left-Handers!
