Why Do Full Moon Yoga?

In the Caribbean, we are surrounded by the ocean, guided by the rising and setting of the sun, and deeply affected by the phases of the moon, whether we realise it or not. One of the most beautiful and energetically potent practices we can embrace is Full Moon Yoga. But what exactly is it, and why do we do it?

 

The Power of the Moon

The full moon has long been associated with heightened energy, emotional intensity and a sense of completion. Just as the moon’s gravitational pull affects the tides, it also influences our physical and energetic bodies, especially because we are made up mostly of water. In yoga, we work with prana (life force energy) and the full moon is believed to magnify that energy. It’s a powerful time to reflect, release and realign.

 

Why Practise Yoga During the Full Moon?

Here’s why so many yogis around the world, and here in Trinidad and Tobago, choose to practise under the full moon’s glow:

 

1. To Reflect and Release

The full moon marks the peak of the lunar cycle, a time of culmination and letting go. Yoga under the full moon encourages us to pause, look inward and reflect on what we’ve been carrying. Through gentle movement and breath, we can consciously release emotional baggage, outdated beliefs, or stress that no longer serves us.

 

2. To Ground and Balance Intense Energy

Full moons can amplify emotions and leave us feeling restless, anxious, or overwhelmed. A slow, grounding yoga sequence helps anchor the nervous system and bring the mind and body back into harmony. It’s about creating calm in the midst of intensity.

 

3. To Celebrate Completion

Whether it’s a goal achieved, a cycle ended, or simply the turning of time, the full moon invites us to acknowledge how far we’ve come. Yoga gives us the space to honour our efforts and set the stage for the next chapter.

 

4. To Connect with Nature and the Collective

Practising outside under the full moon, whether it’s on the beach, in your garden, or with a community group, helps us feel connected to something larger than ourselves. It’s a reminder that we are part of a natural rhythm, one that goes beyond deadlines and to-do lists.

 

5. To Set New Intentions

While the new moon is often seen as the time for setting intentions, the full moon offers clarity. It’s a moment to ask: What do I need to let go of to make space for what I truly want? Full Moon Yoga becomes a moving meditation that supports this inner inquiry.

 

What Is a Full Moon Yoga Class Like?

In my classes, Full Moon Yoga is slower, more mindful and deeply nurturing. Think long holds, soft breathwork, meditation and gentle heart-opening or hip-releasing postures. We might also include journalling, intention setting, or simple rituals like lighting a candle or offering gratitude.

 

It’s not about burning calories; it’s about reconnecting with your inner self, honouring your journey and aligning with the energy of the moon.
