The Power of Setting Intentions: Why It Matters

Start sign with shoes

As the dawn of a new year rises over the twin islands of Trinidad and Tobago, there’s an undeniable energy in the air. The kind that whispers of fresh starts and endless possibilities. For us Trinbagonians, January is not just a new chapter. It’s a vibrant opportunity to take stock of our lives, recalibrate and step boldly into our purpose. And at the heart of this transformation lies the profound act of setting intentions.

Setting intentions is more than a buzzword; it’s a declaration of alignment. It’s standing firm in the knowledge of who you are and deciding, with clarity, how you wish to navigate the year ahead. It’s not about ticking boxes or crafting resolutions rooted in guilt. Instead, it’s about living with purpose and infusing your actions with meaning.

The Difference Between Resolutions and Intentions

In our culture, the word "resolution" often carries a heavy weight. It’s tied to expectations and rigid goals: lose weight, earn more money, be better. Resolutions can sometimes feel like a yardstick measuring our worthiness. And when we fall short, the cycle of self-doubt begins.

Intentions, on the other hand, are expansive and forgiving. They speak to the core of our being, not just our doing. Setting an intention is saying, This is how I want to show up in the world. It’s choosing to act with kindness, resilience, or courage, rather than obsessing over perfection.

Why Intentions Matter

Intentions are powerful because they ground us in the present moment. They remind us that life is lived day by day, moment by moment. While goals chart a course, intentions shape the journey.

Think about how we celebrate Carnival here in Trinidad and Tobago. The masquerader doesn’t only dream of crossing the Savannah stage. They savour the process: choosing the costume and everything that goes along with it, including hair and makeup, learning the soca songs for the season, embracing the joy of J’ouvert morning. Intentions are like that - they’re about embodying joy, love and purpose as we work towards the bigger picture.

Intentions also matter because they foster connection. In a world that often feels rushed and disconnected, intentions encourage us to slow down and be mindful. They help us nurture relationships, show gratitude and truly be present with those around us.

How to Set Intentions

Setting intentions begins with reflection. As a Trinbagonian woman, I often find inspiration in our rich culture and natural beauty. Take a moment to ground yourself, whether by watching the waves kiss the shores of Maracas Bay or sitting under the shade of a Samaan tree.

Ask yourself:

  • What matters most to me?

  • How do I want to feel this year?

  • What values do I want to embody?

Once you’ve reflected, write your intentions down. Keep them simple and personal. For example:

  • I will approach challenges with grace.

  • I will prioritise my mental and physical well-being.

  • I will nurture meaningful connections with others.

Place your intentions somewhere visible, on your mirror, your desk, or even in the notes app on your phone. Let them serve as a gentle reminder of the path you’ve chosen.

Living Your Intentions

Setting intentions is one thing; living them is another.

It’s about weaving them into your daily life. When challenges arise, as they inevitably will, return to your intentions. They will act as your anchor, helping you respond rather than react, guiding you back to your centre.

And remember, there’s no such thing as perfection. Intentions give you the freedom to pivot, to grow, to try again tomorrow. They’re not a rigid script but a living guide to your best self.

Why Now is the Time

This year, let us embrace the power of intention. Let us step boldly into 2025 with clarity and purpose, knowing that our worth is not tied to achievements but to how we choose to live each day.

As we navigate this year, may we find joy in the small moments, courage in the face of fear, and love in our connections with others. May we remember that intention is the compass that keeps us aligned with our true north.

And as the steelpan melodies carry us through the months, let us hold onto the promise of now; the promise that every sunrise is a chance to start anew.

Step Into Your Power

Setting intentions is not just about what you do, but about who you are becoming. It’s about stepping into your power, owning your narrative and shaping a life that feels deeply, authentically yours.

So, as we begin this new year, let us declare our intentions boldly and live them unapologetically. This is your year. Make it audacious!
